How to find House sitting Jobs

A house sitting job is the perfect way to save for a down payment, see other parts of the country or experience a new lifestyle. And live rent free. House sitting usually involves living in an absentee owner’s home or property for an extended period.. The house sitter agrees to accept total responsibility of caring for the home, pets, yard, gardens, and pool areas. Essentially, house sitters live in the home as if it were their own and provide upkeep and security . Whether you are a out-of-work recent college grad or new retiree, a unique way to live rent free and enjoy it is with a house sitting job. Imagine living in a Vermont ski area free for the winter. Imagine spending 6 months on the Oregon Coast rent free working on your writing project. Or how about a rural setting with gardens, animals, mountains and rivers?

The benefits of being a house sitter. House Sitting is liberating, exciting, interesting and fun. It is the perfect job for the recent retiree or even the newly graduated college student. The house sitting life style is generally one of leisure. It is not the hustle and bustle of the corporate world.

The reason many people subscribe to the nomadic lifestyle of house sitting, or caretaker, is an obvious one: They don't have to pay rent. Nor do they have to worry about the financial upkeep of a home. They don't pay property taxes, house insurance or home owner fees.

Many people become full time house sitters to allow time to pursue other occupations, such as writing. Many use the caretaker job to see other parts of the country or world. It is a dream job for people that adapt to change and enjoy new and unique challenges.

What are the qualifications?

To be a professional house sitter you must be impeccably trustworthy. For someone to leave their home and possessions in your care involves great trust. You will be asked to provide personal and professional references. Maybe you will go through a background check, and more than likely you will be required to be bonded and and insured for liability. And maybe as important, have skill and work ethic to perform duties around the house such as gardening, lawn mowing, garbage disposal, pool maintenance, forwarding mail, landscaping and small house repairs. Almost all house sitting services include pet care. If you are experienced with animals or pet sitting, it greatly improves your chances of a house siting assignment.

How is this done?

One of the major clearing houses for house sitters and owners is House Careers.com. Homeowners place available assignments from around the world on the ad board. You then apply directly to the homeowner about the service. The Caretaker Gazette is also a major listing for house sitting opportunities. It list extended stay opportunities by zip code.

Almost all assignments involve pet sitting. In fact, many view this as pet sitting at someone's home. People often want someone to watch after their pets while on vacation, but don't want to leave the house empty for two weeks. So, most house sitting jobs will involve taking care of pets and necessary desire to perform all that goes with that.

Thanks for writing about housesitting. I have tried all the housesitting websites and have found www.caretaker.org to be the best for housesitting assignments. I recently started using www.caretaker.org and have found two housesitting assignments there so far.
